Reproductive and Sexual Health Law
University of Toronto, Canada
Deadline: February 15, 2009
Website: www.law.utoronto.ca

Graduate Scholarships in Reproductive Health are designed to permit law graduates from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia or Central and Eastern Europe who have an interest in human rights and women’s health in their own countries, to undertake advanced research and study in this emerging field of law.

The scholarship is designed to enable students to explore the legal and ethical issues in reproductive and sexual health, such as the multiple causes of maternal mortality; barriers to availability of and access to reproductive health services; the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS; and abusive sexual relationships. Beyond the required graduate seminar in Alternative Approaches to Legal Scholarship and the foundation course in Reproductive and Sexual Health Law, and the Health Equity and Law Clinic, course work is designed on an individual basis, subject to the approval of the Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies..

Students are encouraged to select other courses relevant to their plan of study, such as courses addressing medical law and ethics; national and international protection of human rights including women’s rights; family law issues including violence against women; feminism and the law; law and development; and law and society issues. Given the Faculty’s support of interdisciplinary approaches to legal scholarship, students holding this scholarship may also register for courses in other departments of the university including Women’s Studies and Bioethics through the Collaborative Degree Programs.

In addition to formal courses, students are encouraged to participate in workshops held at the Faculty of Law, the Joint Centre for Bioethics and the Centre for Research on Women’s Health. Some students may wish to apply for an internship related to their research for approximately 10 weeks with a relevant organization, arranged through the Faculty’s International Human Rights Program, and/or build their research skills through contributions to the Programme’s listserve and/or the Women’s Human Rights Resources website. .

The Scholarships cover tuition and incidental fees, provide a stipend of $15,000 and books. This scholarship is open to any graduate student from the targeted regions.

After completion of their Fellowship, a Fellow must return to their home country and reside there for a minimum of two years. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that Fellows fulfil the objective the Fellowship programme, the international protection and promotion of reproductive and sexual rights.

INTUNE WINTER SCHOOL ON MULTILEVEL MODELING IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
Pompeu Fabra University -Barcelona
11-14 January 2009
Deadline: 15 November 2008
Website: www.intune.it

The winter school is intended for PhD students and young scholars interested in multilevel modelling family of techniques. The
school will be limited to 30 participants: 20 participants from the IntUne Consortium and 10 participants that are not involved in the IntUne research, but interested in the topic of the school.

The winter school is hosted by the Department of Political Science, University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Tuition and accommodation costs will be covered for all participants. Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to 250€ for the IntUne researchers only, while the external participants will have to provide for their own travel expenses.

The Winter School “Multilevel Modelling in Political Science” wants to offer a practical introduction to issues related to Multilevel Modelling, an increasingly used family of techniques whose application can be quite diverse and complex. For this reason, the Winter School would like to cover, in practical and problem-solving ways, several issues that are relevant when using these techniques, such as OLS and Multilevel models; Interaction, lack of degrees of freedom, time and space in HLM; HLM in nonlinear models; and the available software programmes. At the same time, the school aims to socialize and motivate young researchers to work together in an interdisciplinary environment, paying attention to both the theoretical and empirical dimensions of the work in these fields.

The Winter School will assume participants have a working knowledge of OLS and its assumptions and are familiar with non linear
models (probit, logit, tobit, etc.).

The application should include a Curriculum Vitae, a brief motivation letter, one reference letter directly sent by referees and the
application form. You may download the application form here. Please submit applications by email to Angela Movileanu at movileanu@unisi.it.

The deadline for submission is 15 November 2008. The successful applicants will be notified by 15 December 2008.

Montreal, Canada
Deadline: 21 November 2008

The IHRTP is intended for human rights workers and educators from non-governmental organizations, National Human Rights Institutions, government bodies and educational institutions. The goal of the IHRTP is to strengthen the capacity of human rights organizations to undertake human rights education efforts aimed at building a global culture of human rights. The curriculum is based on principles of adult experiential learning in which participants and facilitators engage in a process of mutual teaching and learning. The Program Information provides a detailed description of the Program.

Equitas received more than 800 applications for the 2008 IHRTP and it is therefore unlikely that there will be enough spaces for all of the qualified candidates. The selection process and participant profile Equitas is looking for are described in the documents below. The Equitas Selection Committee gives priority to the organisations best able to demonstrate their commitment and effectiveness in relation to human rights promotion and education. Consideration is also given to overall gender balance, geographic representation and the availability of bursaries.

The training will be held from June 13 to July 3, 2009 in Montreal, Canada. Find the application materials here.
