Open Society Fellowship
Open Society Institute
Proposals are accepted year round
Applications received by January 8, 2010, will be evaluated by March 24, 2010.
Applications received by April 28, 2010, will be evaluated by July 21, 2010.
Website: www.soros.org

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Institute and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Institute and expect to contribute meaningfully to OSI’s thinking in return.

WHO MAY APPLY
The Open Society Fellowship chooses its fellows from a diverse pool of applicants that includes journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields. Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject area and a track record of professional accomplishment.

The fellowship seeks “idea entrepreneurs” from across the world who are ready to challenge conventional wisdom. Successful applicants will be eager to exploit the many resources offered by OSI and be prepared to engage constructively with the global OSI community. Ideal fellows are specialists who can see beyond the parochialisms of their field and possess the tenacity to complete a project of exceptional merit.

REQUIREMENTS
All interested applicants should complete the online application form at https://oas.soros.org/oas and submit supporting materials for consideration. Please read the FAQs before applying. Applicants may submit a project proposal or other materials in a language other than English, as long as they also submit an English translation. Certified translations are strongly recommended.

Once the initial information has been entered, applicants receive login details and an ID number that allows them to make additions and revisions to the form until materials are submitted. The ID number should be quoted in any correspondence.

Applicants may mail their hard-copy materials to:

Open Society Fellowship
Open Society Institute
400 West 59th Street
New York, NY 10019

Note: Only applicants without Internet access may send an application by post. A PDF application form can be downloaded below. All others must apply online.

FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT
For a full-time fellow based in the U.S., the stipend ranges from $60,000 to $100,000. For fellows based in other countries, appropriate adjustments will be made to reflect the economic circumstances and costs of living in those countries. Stipends are based on several factors including work experience, seniority, prior earnings, and the proportion of time committed to the fellowship. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant’s current salary. In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation.

In most cases, OSI provides fellows with communications support to convey their work to a broader audience and influence current debates. OSI also integrates fellows into its networks of individual and organizational partners and grantees.

OSI may cover additional project expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance. Fellowship expenses should not include operational or programmatic costs, such as employees and physical infrastructure. The purpose of the fellowship is to support individual fellows; therefore OSI will only cover individual expenses.

The fellowship does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research.

Lions Club International
Deadline: Varies

“The Lions International Youth Camp and Exchange Program is a unique cultural learning opportunity. Most exchanges last about four to six weeks.

Participants of the Lions International Youth Camp and Exchange Program must:

    * be between the ages of 15 and 22.
* be sponsored by a Lions club
* have a basic knowledge of the language of the host country.
* be suitable to represent their community, sponsor Lions club, and country.
* be willing to accept the customs of another culture.
* provide proof of health, medical, travel insurance, and a liability release agreement.

Costs and Travel Arrangements
Travel arrangements for participants are usually made between the Lions youth camp and exchange chairpersons in the sponsor and host countries. Details are passed to sponsor/host Lions clubs and participants.

Financial arrangements for transportation costs (including actual fares, insurance, airport fees, customs duties, and layover or overnight fees) are the responsibility of the sponsor Lions club. Some camps require a camp fee. Costs may be paid by the sponsor Lions club, by the participant, the participant’s family, or a combination of these sources. If you will need to raise funds, ask your sponsor Lions club for an acceptance letter and other materials that will help you explain the program to donors.

Arrangements for food and lodging are covered by the host Lions club, during and exchange.

Participants are responsible for personal expenses (approximately US$75 per week) such as phone calls home, souvenirs, etc.

Exchanges: Host family stays can be arranged in any of the more than 190 countries in which Lions clubs exist. Most exchanges last between four and six weeks and the participant (ages 15 to 21) stays with one or more host families. Participants experience life as part of the host family and enjoy excursions with the host Lions club.

Camps: One or two week long camps bring together young people (ages 16 to 22) from around the world. Camps usually include a host family stay (exchange) that lasts between one and four weeks. More than 100 Lions youth camps in about 39 countries are held each year. Activities vary and can include visits to places of historic or natural interest, sports, and country presentations by camp participants.”

For more information, contact your local Lions Club or go to http://www.lionsclubs.org

Amnesty International USA
Reebok Human Rights
Summer Fellowship 2008
Deadline: 4 March 2008

“The Reebok Human Rights Fellowship offers students a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of human rights alongside international human rights leaders. Participating fellows will have the opportunity to develop skills in human rights work with either an organization connected to a Reebok Human Rights Award winner or Amnesty International USA (AIUSA). Fellowships will be awarded to 8-12 outstanding students.

Students must be 18-25 year old students of any nationality attending school in the U.S. or U.S. citizens aged 18-25 studying abroad.

Fellowship projects typically last from four to six weeks during the months of June-August 2008.

AIUSA will cover the cost of air travel, accommodation and, for overseas fellowships, appropriate insurance up to a maximum of $2,500. Fellows will need to fund other costs incurred such as domestic travel, food and telephone calls.

Host organizations are based in the United States and abroad and include organizations which are connected to Reebok Human Rights Award winners and AIUSA. All organizations share AIUSA’s human rights goals. Successful applicants will be informed of the organization they will work for and its location by the end of April 2008.

Applicants have the opportunity to state whether they would participate in a fellowship posting overseas or a domestic fellowship posting.

The fellowship will not fund internships or projects students arrange for themselves.

Doing human rights work can occasionally be challenging, both physically and mentally, and may, in some circumstances, require fellows to perform their duties in difficult situations. Applicants must not only be in good health, but must also be able to work in such circumstances and be willing to accept the risks associated with them.

Fellows will not be posted to areas of countries where there are ongoing conflicts and fellows posted internationally will be helped with identifying suitable accommodation. AIUSA will assist all fellows with preparing for their fellowship so that they have a safe and rewarding experience.

Applicants can express a preference for the particular issue they would like to work on from the choices given on the application form. However, it is not guaranteed that successful applicants will be invited to work on their first choice human rights issue.

The fellowship will not fund internships or projects students arrange for themselves.

The projects fellows work on vary but all share a focus on promoting human rights. A typical project will include research and opportunities to develop activist skills. All of the host organizations have goals which are in line with AIUSA?s campaigns. Find out more about AIUSA’s campaigns to denounce torture, abolish the death penalty, stop violence against women, stop the violence in Darfur, release prisoners of conscience and secure economic, social and cultural rights for all.

In some instances more than one fellow will be posted to a host organization.

A panel of human rights experts will consider a variety of factors when reviewing applications, including:

    * Relevant skills, knowledge and experience that applicants can offer to host organizations promoting human rights.
* Examples are the ability to work and effectively communicate in diverse settings, problem solving skills and the ability to cope with challenges and use initiative.
* It is recommended that applicants provide examples from their experience which demonstrate these competencies.
* A demonstrated commitment to human rights activism and upholding human rights.
* An imaginative and effective post fellowship human rights education project outline (see more below).
* Skills outlined in applicant’s resume including academic performance.
* References.

Reebok fellows will be required to share their fellowship experience through human rights education work during the semester following the fellowship. Applicants are asked to provide an outline of a creative human rights education project which they would like to organize at their schools, in their communities or online and explain why they believe it would persuade young people to respect, promote and defend human rights. Examples include speaking engagements, activities for students in school (e.g. middle and high school), publications and online activities. Find out more about AIUSA’s human rights education work at www.aiusa.org/education

Your reference letter should be written and signed by a teacher, professor or work supervisor (including the supervisor of relevant voluntary work). They should provide a recommendation detailing why you are a strong candidate for the fellowship.

Successful applicants are notified by the end of April 2008.

ASIL-Helton Fellowship Program
Deadline: February 15, 2008

“Funded in part by contributions from ASIL members, Helton Fellowships provide financial assistance in the form of “micro-grants” for law students and young professionals to pursue field work and research on significant issues involving international law, human rights, humanitarian affairs, and related areas.

Helton Fellowship micro-grants are intended to ensure that these individuals have access to modest amounts of funding that can often stand between them and their first professional opportunities to become effective practitioners, experts, and scholars of international law.

Fellows will undertake their project between April 2008 and August 2008 in association with an established educational institution, international organization, or non-governmental organization working in areas related to international law, human rights, and humanitarian affairs. ASIL does not assist in securing organizational sponsoring for Fellows.

Fellows must be willing to share their fellowship experiences upon their return, usually by writing a reflection paper available to others to read.

Eligibility Guidelines/Qualifications: Applicants can be of any nationality but must be current law students or have graduated from law school no earlier than December 2005. As mentioned above, the successful applicant’s proposal will involve affiliation with an NGO or human rights organization; applicants should have contacted the sponsoring organization to discuss their proposal prior to applying for the Helton Fellowship. In acknowledgment of Arthur Helton’s commitment to human rights advocacy in the field, preferential consideration may be given to proposals demonstrating a significant fieldwork component. Application submissions are limited to one per person.

Awards will be made by March 24, 2008.

Application Requirements:

    * Completed application form (submitted online)
* Writing Sample (2-3 pages)
* Current CV or resume
* Evidence of law student status and/or date of graduation from a law school
* Two letters of support
