Program Description:
The Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships aspire to develop leadership within the Asia Pacific to build partnership and linkages among the neighboring country. ALA Scholarship enable the scholars to take Masters or Doctorate degree in Australia which means that it does not include Graduate Diplomas. The only exception is, if the Master courses taken requires the completion of Graduate Diploma as part of the Masters degree. An ALA Scholarship also offered Leadership Development Program in Australia to meet the goal of the scholarship. The field of studies the program offers are those related to AusAID’s priority areas of disability, education, food security, economic growth, governance, environment, infrastructure, water and sanitation,human rights, health, gender, regional stability and rural development. The scholarship inclusions of the program are the following:
a. There will be a mobilisation of allowance of A$2,500 available if an awardee has been issued with a valid AusAID Student visa for the duration of the scholarship.
b. The scholars will be given $5,000 by the Institution upon arrival in Australia as a contribution towards expenses including the text books, study materials, rental bonds, home contents insurance, additional medical insurance, etc.
c. Full academic fees and other compulsory fees will be paid directly by the AusAID (Canberra) to the Institution.
d. There will be a 4-6 weeks Introductory Academic Program provided by the Institution that is prior to their commencing studies.
e. Scholars will receive a Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) that paid by the Institution at a rate determined by AusAID (Canberra) since they would review the CLE annually. For 2009-2010, the CLE is A$26,800.
e. SEA will provide the financial assistance of up to A$2,000/year for the enhancement of their formal studies.
f. AusAID (Canberra) will cover all the costs associated in participating the Leadership Development Program.
g. OSHC will be paid by the Institution on behalf of the scholar for the duration of the scholarship that covers only the basic medical cost. Ancillary services such as orthodontist, dentist, optometrist, etc. will be covered by the scholar’s own expense or the additional medical insurance.
h. At the end of studies, the institution will grant the scholar for a single economy class airfare to the Scholar’s home country via the most direct route.
Program Requirements:
Applicants must not be engaged/married to someone who holds the New Zealand or Australian citizenship or permanent residency except for nationals including Niue, Tokelau and Cook Islands who also have NZ citizenship. You must also a residence in a country other than Australia and applied the program outside of Australia. Applicants also must not have held a scholarship that will study outside of the home country in 24 months preceding the application date. They must also have an unconditional offer for a postgraduate course (either Masters or Doctorate that starts from the year they applied for the scholarship to be undertaken full-time at one of the participating Australian institutions/campuses). Another requirement is that you must have an acceptable results from one of these English proficiency tests, obtained no longer than 24 months with regards to the opening date of the program application period:
an IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5 (with no band less than 6) or
a TOEFL paper-based test score of at least 580, or
a TOEFL computer-based test score of at least 237, or
a TOEFL internet-based test score of at least 92
Application Instructions:
Before applying, it is important to read first the Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships Handbook (refer to their official website). Make sure that you meet the eligibilities of the scholarship and you have all the required supporting documentation. Ineligible and incomplete applications will not be considered by AusAID. The applications for 2012 intake will be varied per country but is around May-June 2011.
