PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Conference will collectively bring together about 200 young people (aged 15 to 24), to learn from one another and share experiences and ideas on environmental actions. The participants will come from about 100 countries of the world. The selection process will take into account gender and country representation.
The conference will be in three segments:
a) The Global Townhall meeting The first segment will be a Global Townhall meeting on 21 August 2009. The meeting will bring together 1,000 participants comprising 200 youth and the 800 children who will have participated in the Children’s conference held at the same venue. The Global Townhall meeting will also include virtual participants connected via webcasting. The Townhall meeting is organized jointly with UNICEF and is supported by other United Nations agencies, NGOs and private sector partners.
b)The Regional Meetings From the 22 to 23 August 2009, the youth delegates will participate in regional meetings to discuss regional activities, share experience and develop regional actions. The session will be facilitated by representatives from the UNEP Regional Offices.
c)The Conference The main youth conference will be held from 24 to the 26 August. The theme of the conference is Climate Change – Our challenge.
The daily themes will include:
* Climate Change: Limiting my Footprint
* Youth and Green Jobs
* Disasters and Conflicts and their Impact on the Environment
* Sustainable lifestyles
The expected outcomes of the conference include commitments from youth on the actions they will undertake after the conference, regional action plans and a newly elected Tunza Youth Advisory Council. An important outcome of this particular conference is a youth statement on climate change which will be presented to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009.
WHO MAY APPLY
Only organizations working on or interested in environmental and sustainable development may nominate two of its members, that are active in the organization, to the Conference. The organization must nominate two candidates (one female and one male). However, only one of them will be elected.
Candidates must have birthdates strictly falling between 26 August 1985 and 21 August 1994.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT DETAILS
Limited financial support will be available for some participants from developing countries only
